I have created this website to share my experiences and provide links to nest box designs developed by a number of organisations across Australia, published research relating to nest boxes in Australia, ongoing projects involving the use of nest boxes, and other available resources about improving nest box utilisation by Australian native hollow-using species.

At the present I have over 30 nest boxes installed around my regenerating woodland property, just outside of Canberra. I have selected nest boxes designs for all the different bird and mammal species that are known to occur in our local area.

It has been a steep learning curve. In My first year of nest box installations in 2016, most nest boxes where nesting by birds was attempted, were raided by Brushtail Possums and Sugar Gliders. Only a single Wood Duck nesting pair using a nest box with my first attempt of adding possum tree-guards, were successful.

I have developed one successful method for keeping Sugar Gliders and Brushtail Possums from raiding bird nesting boxes, however am currently trialling a number of other methods to prevent Sugar Glider access. They are proving to be gravity magicians!

Possums (Brushtails, Sugar Gliders and Ringtails) however, have been no challenge at all with regards to encouragement to use theirs and everyone else’s nest boxes on my property.

Apologies for the Facebook link also popping up at the bottom of each page, it’s a bit annoying. I couldn’t find a setting to turn this off in the widget so it’s both top & bottom, or nothing for now.
